Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone. It’s a holiday that practically celebrates only beer. How excellent! Well…what’s not excellent is being fucking poor with no job prospects! HA! Regardless, I just got my tax rebates so I did what any sensible person would do: go hop-therapy shopping.
This time of year I have a drink tradition introduced to me by a nice Irish pub back in Evanston, IL. It’s called the Black and Blue.



Black and Blue is a mixed-beer drink that pits Guinness against Blue Moon. Not only that, but using some ‘fancy’ bar tricks you can actually float the Guinness on top making it scientifically 100% more awesome. To do this you’ll need to following:
- Blue Moon [if you know other cool ones let me know!]
- Guinness [try hard to not drink this before we start here]
- A shitty spoon, to bend [mine below is bent actually the wrong way, I'm an idiot]
- Thirst!

Pour the Blue Moon first and let it settle. When you are done licking your lips and the head has died off, GENTLY, GENTLY pour Guinness onto the spoon. Pouring on the spoon to reduces turbulent mixing, allowing you to layer the less dense Guinness on top (FUCK YEAH ENGINEERING). I will guarantee you will fuck up the first time like I did below…but that only means you’re ‘forced’ to drink your mistakes.

Give it a couple of more tries and you too can enjoy the super tasty glory. They start of with the wonderful thickness of Guinness and end with a refreshing wheat send off. Another plus: fuck ups aka complete mixes taste pretty great too.

Success! Finally…although I forgot to take a pic right away before slamming it down. Smithwicks – to make a Black and Tan – is also good in the mix if you want to stay 100% Irish. Again, if you recommend other combination, please let me know in the replies!
