This I picked out while searching for this week’s Wednesday night reviews. It stood out because I’ve never had a Wine-Style Ale which is apparently named that because this style usually reaches the range of ABV that wine is in. Also, I’m pretty Swedish so I was excited to try something from there!
Brewery Hometown: Nyköping, Sweden
Appearance: It looks like a very thick unfiltered wheat ale. A soft honey color that you can’t really see through. The color just looks like it’s going to be sweet and decadent. I’m not seeing any head, so I’m pretty sure it just doesn’t exist…
Aroma: The smell reminds me almost of Goose Demolition or Duvel? Its sweet and warm, very inviting. I could see where it would be associated with wine; it just has a robust scent that’s sweet and soothing.
Taste:The flavor transitions on this go from a bold punch of bitterness to a sweeter undertone that lingers in your mouth. The alcohol is apparent but not in a bad way, kind of like how wine’s alcohol level is apparent but it works with the flavor. The carbonation isn’t rolling bubbles but its definitely a part of the development, very bold and then subsides and lets the flavors come out. Much like the Imperial White we just reviewed this is one of those beers I would consider to be notably sticky. Not in a bad way, just thick. As the beer’s warming it’s also warming me, the alcohol is becoming more apparent and creating new warmer tones of sweetness and malty flavor. I just licked my gums and found it stashed away for a cold bitter sweet treat! (once again, sticky…).
Alcohol: 9.5%
Drink one or all?: Pretty sure this only comes in the option of a single bottle. So drink it, all of it.
Cost: $4-5/11.2oz.
Overall:17. It’s definitely a solid beer that I would get again if I had the money and was in the mood for a smooth creamy/sticky sweet beer. This beer keeps reminding me of Demo and I reallllly want that to come back…
