St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout
(16/20)

Grandma Farley gave me a little money (phonetically: jingabets) for the holidays, so I made sure to get something to keep me warm. Jenny and I stopped over at Binny’s for some goodies and this Canadian box grabbed my attention. Definitely has me interested to see what else this brewery has around!

Brewery Hometown: Montreal, Quebec

Appearance: Dark moody black/brown. Rich, dark tan head that lingers. Definitely has some character.

Aroma: Heavy duty malts are on the front lines. A hint of oatmeal, roasted coffee. Has some sweet hints like of dark wheat beers (I got reminded of Hacker-Pschorr Weisse Dark?). Interesting.

Taste: Along the same lines as the smell, dry and malty. The coffee overtones (roasted) seem to come across stronger than the oatmeal; don’t really get the oatmeal flavor until the tail end of some sips, very light. Has dark complexities that keep later sips interesting, semi-chocolate/coffee? Strong aftertaste that could be kind of offensive (notably near the end of the bottle). This would be wonderful with a Montreal bagel :)

Alcohol: 5.0%

Drink one or all?: 1, slow down and enjoy

Cost: $9/4 pack

Overall: 16/20, not mindblowing, but still wonderfully complex

I’m not typically a fan of Oatmeal Stouts but this sounds pretty decent. Not all are the same, maybe i’ll give them another chance soon.

Best enjoyed slowly and by itself. A good one to start a night :)

P.S. Hacker-Pschorr Weisse Dark = Dunkles Weißes. Don’t compromise, Farley, not even linguistically.
