Today I am done with finals and therefor done with my college coursework! HELLS YES! So I picked up this little number about 2 weeks ago and have been saving it for this occasion. My anticipation for this beer is that it will taste like the chocolate waterfall in Willy Wonka… Because that would just be awesome!
Brewery Hometown: Boston, MA
Appearance: Pours out looking a little thinner than i was hoping but still excessively dark. put up to the light you can see dark brownish reddish tones but can’t really see through the glass. If not put up to the light it just looks dark and thick (much like Samuel Adams Winter Lager)It of course comes with that amazing lacing throughout the entire drink from the head which initially appears as a somewhat dark caramel color.
Aroma: First smell: sweet and rich. The smells appears to be a wintery brew with a complex warming rich scent. The chocolate smell is coming off as more of a dark chocolate (i guess that kills my wish for the willy wonka waterfall) again comparable to the scent of their winter lager.
Taste: This is definitely chocolatey, but the other flavors are very warming and add a nice spice. As the smell gave me a hint it isn’t a milk chocolate but more of a bitter rich dark chocolate. Personally not a huge fan of dark chocolate, however the quality of chocolate used to brew this shows itself off and makes for a very enjoyable drink. Its smooth initially and throughout the entire sip, each and every sip. The warmer it gets the thicker it got and the rich chocolately tones kept developing. I even took a 5 minute break just to casually see how the flavor lingered… it turned into a 10 minute break because it was still there! I got bored of not drinking it and kept going…
Alcohol: 5.6%
Drink one or all?: 1
Cost: $15/650mL bottle (OUCH)
Overall: 18.25/20 Its like they brewed their winter lager ontop of really good chocolate. Subtle but bold, unfortunitely its a tad pricey. this would easily be a regular seasonal drink that i would purchase if the price was right.
